JAKARTA, SWARAJOMBANG.com – Wakil Ketua Dewan Perwakilan Daerah (DPD RI), Sultan mengkritik upaya Fakultas Kehutanan IPB University dan Asosiasi Petani Kelapa Sawit Indonesia (Apkasindo) yang menggagas karya akademik dan merekomendasikan kelapa sawit sebagai tanaman hutan.
“Kami tidak tahu apa motifnya, tapi ini akan menjadi gagasan akademik paling kontroversial untuk dikaji lebih jauh oleh kita semua. Atau memang IPB sekedar ingin menguji nalar publik. Bagi saya, hutan harus diidentifikasi sebagai sebuah ekosistem yang kaya akan keanekaragaman hayati,” kata Sultan melalui keterangan resminya, Kamis (03/2/2022).
Seperti dilansir laman resmi majalah Sawit Indonesia, Kamis (27/1/2022), naskah akademik rekomendasi perubahan status sawit menjadi tanaman hutan digagas sejak Oktober 2021. Naskah akademik ini terbit sebagai respons terhadap perlakuan diskriminatif (crop apartheid) oleh beberapa pihak terhadap tanaman kelapa sawit.
Menurutnya, upaya pengalihan status sawit sebagai komoditas perkebunan menjadi hasil hutan merupakan pintu masuk legal bagi modus deforestasi di Indonesia. Jika ini benar terjadi, Indonesia akan ditertawakan dan dikucilkan dunia internasional.
“Sebagai perguruan tinggi pertanian, fakultas kehutanan IPB seharusnya berperan sebagai inkubator forestri dalam upaya perlindungan terhadap ekosistem hutan dan peningkatan produktivitas hasil hutan Indonesia,” kata Sultan.
Kita harus akui bahwa sawit berperan besar pada neraca perdagangan RI, tapi tidak dengan mengekspansi ke kawasan hutan. Lahan sawit kita sudah sangat luas, tapi produktifitasnya masih sangat rendah jika dibandingkan dengan negara tetangga Malaysia. Era ekstensifikasi sudah tidak relevant dengan kemajuan teknologi pertanian,” ungkapnya.
Selanjutnya, mantan Wakil Gubernur Bengkulu itu menekankan agar IPB sebaiknya mencari solusi bagi pemulihan hutan dan gambut, sekaligus melakukan inovasi diversifikasi produk sejenis CPO dari komoditas selain sawit, bukan justru menjustifikasi pelaku usaha sawit untuk mengganggu biodiversitas dalam ekosistem hutan.
“Sangat berbahaya jika keilmiahan, objektivitas dan rasionalitas kampus terkooptasi oleh orientasi bisnis pelaku usaha yang tidak peduli dengan masa depan lingkungan hidup dengan alasan pembelaan terhadap diskriminasi sawit”, tegasnya. Justru selama ini industri perkebunan sawit-lah yang sudah terlalu banyak mendiskriminasi fauna dan flora endemik dilindungi di Kalimantan, Sumatera dan di Papua. Sebentar lagi primata orang utan di Kalimantan mungkin akan punah.
